Postgraduate Programs

ADVANCED DENTAL EDUCATION

The UCSF School of Dentistry has developed an extensive program of advanced education to provide opportunities to graduate dentists and dental hygienists. These programs are designed to prepare dentists to become specialty practitioners, teachers, and researchers, and most lead to certification in the chosen area of training.

The Office of Admissions and Recruitment distributes and collects application materials while the separate departments are responsible for the selections of their students. Each program has its own specific requirements, application deadline and timetable for applicant review and notification. Application procedures vary from program to program.

Currently, the School of Dentistry offers the following programs (Please click the program of your interest for requirements and admission information):

CENTER FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION

In addition to these degree and certificate programs, the Center for Continuing Education in Dentistry also offers lectures, symposia, clinical demonstrations, and short, hands-on participation courses that are scheduled for one, two, or up to five days. These are designed to enable the dentist or dental hygienist to keep abreast of recent concepts and techniques and to provide opportunities to explore new theories and procedures.

Brochures and further information about UCSF's continuing education opportunities can be obtained through:

POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLARS AND FELLOWSHIPS

Major types of postdoctoral appointments include (1) fellowships (2) postdoctoral trainee, and (3) visiting scholar. Postdoctoral scholars come to UCSF from all over the world under many different funding mechanisms.

In some cases, departments or individual faculty members advertise for postdoctoral scholars and recruit widely for applicants. Often, individual fellows with their own funding source will approach a faculty member or department for sponsorship.

In many cases, consideration of an individual for appointment is the result of a recommendation by a colleague or is initiated by the applicant seeking sponsorship. Information about these types of opportunities should be directed to the director of the specialty program.

FINANCIAL AID

Various financial aid programs are available to students. These include scholarships, grants, loans, work-study, and guaranteed student loans and awards from outside agencies and organizations. Information is available upon request from UCSF Student Financial Aid and explains all of these programs and the application process in detail.

Upon admittance, students should apply to Student Financial Aid.

Note: Foreign students who are not permanent residents of the United States are not eligible for any of the federal programs available through the University nor are they eligible to participate in the Guaranteed Student Loan Program; they will need to rely on their own resources.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS OFFICE (ISSO)

This office will offer international students and scholars help with questions and provide services related to visas. They also offer interesting seminars and workshops during the year. For more information, please visit the ISSO website.

HOUSING OPTIONS

The University operates and maintains a housing service. Economical off-campus housing is in short supply and great demand. Admitted postgraduate students who need housing should plan to arrive on campus at least four weeks or more before the beginning of the quarter to arrange for living accommodations. The Housing Office maintains a listing of off-campus apartments, flats, houses, rooms, and various types of shared accommodations. It is strongly urged that incoming students contact the Housing Office on their arrival for informational materials.
