UCSF School of Dentistry Dean John D.B. Featherstone is pleased to announce that Dr. Peter Sargent has been appointed to the position of Associate Dean for Research for the UCSF School of Dentistry.
The appointment is effective as of Monday July 8th, 2013 when Dr. Sargent takes over the position from outgoing Associate Dean for Research Dr. Richard Jordan.
Dr. Sargent will add his duties as Associate Dean for Research to his role as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
Peter Sargent, PhD, did his doctoral work in Neurobiology at Harvard University, and then did postdoctoral work at UCSF and Stanford University. He came to UCSF in 1989 as an Associate Professor in the Department of Stomatology. In 2005 he was appointed Interim Chair of the future Cell and Tissue Biology department, and in 2010 he was appointed Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
His research focuses on the role of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in synaptic transmission in the nervous system. Over a period of nearly 35 years his lab has been funded principally by the National Institutes of Health, with additional funding from National Science Foundation and the American Heart Association.
Says Dean Featherstone: "I am so pleased that Peter has accepted this position. He is ideally suited for the task and will blend it well with his other duties as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs."
"I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Richard Jordan for the excellent job that he has done as Associate Dean for Research. He has left things in great shape, and I also wish to thank him for agreeing to continue in the role while the search for his successor was conducted."
