The Dean's Faculty Development Fund
Dean's Faculty Development Funds are available to individual faculty through direct application. Please see details in this Announcement. Please also see Guidelines for Applicants before applying. The application can be uploaded by following this link. If you are not sure about using this mechanism for the opportunity that you seek, please email Associate Dean Peter Sargent.
The School of Dentistry has adopted a bridge funding program to assist researchers in "bridging" a previously funded project with the anticipated re-funding of that project from extramural sources. A brief desription of the project, including eligibility and review criteria, can be found here. Note that the most competitive proposals will be those seek to bridge previously funded work where a renewal application has received promising (but unfunded) scores and where comments by reviewing agencies suggest that a re-application would be successful. This program is funded one-third each by the department, the Dean's office, and the Chancellor's office. The program is modeled after the School of Medicine's program. Applications should be submitted electronically as a single pdf document and should contain:
- a cover page, which lists the funded project that is to be bridged,
- a biosketch and other support section, which should include past, pending, and current funding,
- a letter (2 pages, max) detailing research program, financial needs, attempts to re-establish funding, description of adverse impact of impending shortfall on research program, and plan for re-establishing funding during the bridge year,
- a budget,
- a letter of support from the Chair, who must state whether s/he is willing to committe one-third of the value of the award, should one be made, from departmental sources, and
- information [including summary statement, priority score, percentile and funding payline (if known)], for most recent attempt to fund the project to be bridged.
The application process is "rolling;" you may apply at any time. Applications will be reviewed by a committee consisting of the Chairs and the Associate Dean for Research. Submit the application to Associate Dean Peter Sargent electronically as a single pdf file.
UCSF launches new Teach for UCSF Certificate Program

Teach for UCSF offers members of the UCSF community a way to develop as teachers. In as little as 8 hours per year for 2-5 years, participants can advance toward completion of a certificate by choosing from an array of free UCSF Educational Skills Workshops. Currently, there are three certificate themes:
- General Teaching: skills for teaching in a health sciences classroom setting.
- Clinical Teaching: skills for teaching in a clinical environment.
- Simulation Teaching: skills for teaching with simulation.

Opportunities for Faculty Development (DETAIL)
The Teaching Scholars program develops educational leaders and scholars through an intensive seminar series, mentored projects, a network of educational colleagues, and collaborative learning. The program models the goals that it has for the learners including providing a research base for the content and exemplifying various teaching strategies selected to match the content. The participants should finish the program with a scholarly product that has been submitted for peer review. For additional details, see the Teaching Scholars Program web site.
The School of Medicine has released a calendar their Educational Skills Workshops for 2013-14. Topics include;

- Teaching and Assessing Competencies
Please refer to the School's Educational Skills Workshop site for additional details and for a full list of the workshops. Although the School of Medicine has offered to make these workshops available on a space-available basis to faculty in the other Schools, we cannot guarantee that you will be able to get into the workshop of your choice. The best approach is to act quickly! Please also, bear in mind that you may need to contact your Division Chair to arrange for leave from your teaching/research/clinic activities prior to applying for one of these courses.
This is a 10 week course typically offered at the Mt. Zion campus that meets for one and a half hours a week. Only 15 participants can be accepted, and the course fills quickly. The course is intended for faculty and postdoctoral basic science or clinical fellows who wish to learn specific ways to marshal the details of a biomedical research paper or grant proposal into a clear, concise, and comprehensible story that will be understandable to an interdisciplinary leadership (papers) or meet an agency's review criteria (proposals). Coursework includes didactic presentations and significant writing and revising. Homework is expected to require up to one half hours per class meeting. For additional details visit the website.
The Summer Research Workshop includes four courses that are the starting point for all clinical research training at UCSF. These courses introduce the field of clinical research by providing instruction in the design of clinical research studies, collecting and managing clinical research data, and preparing for a career in clinical research. For individuals who will participate in the research in a supportive capacity, the Shop alone is sufficient training. For others desiring to be independent investigators, the workshops serve as an introductory material for the more advanced ATC art certificate and Masters Degree in Clinical Research Program. The ATCR is a four academic quarter program intended for advanced pre-doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty members who desire rigorous training in the methoda and conduct of clinical research. This includes instruction in the epidemiologic and biostatistical methods used in observational and experimental clinical research as well as training in oral and written presentation of research. In addition to required coursework, scholars are expected to develop and implement their research projects throughout the year and will have access to TICR faculty for methodologic guidance. Sponsored by the Chancellor's Council on Faculty Life, the UCSF Faculty Leadership Collaborative is conducted by Coro Northern California, a nationally recognized leadership training organization. The program is designed for UCSF faculty who want to build community as well as their personal and professional development skills, awareness and knowledge. There are 3 programs: a half-day workshop for junior faculty, a three day program entitled An Introduction to Leadership and the full program, UCSF Coro Faculty Leadership Collaborative. Harvard Macy Institute - Enhancing Healthcare Education through Professional Development, applications due September 28, 2012
The goal of this Harvard Macy Program is to enhance the professional development of physicians, basic scientists and other healthcare professionals as educators. The program will combine 5 major themes: learning and teaching, curriculum, evaluation, leadership, and information technology. The program provides a select group of 60 healthcare professionals with the knowledge base and skills to enhance their expertise in both conducting an educational project of their own design and taking a leadership role in educational activities at their home institutions. for additional information, go to the Harvard Macy Institute website.
The ADA/Forsyth EBD course is a five-day intensive program to help dental educators integrate EBD principles into the dental curriculum, into clinical care, and into research. The course is held in early November Cambridge, MA, and is sponsored by the ADA Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry and the Forsyth Institute. EBD Champions Conference (sponsored by the ADA), April 25-27, 2013, Chicago, IL
The goal of the EBD Champions Conference is to recruit and train selected professionals throughout the United States to learn what Evidence-Based Dentistry is and how to apply EBD principles and tools in clinical decision-making and then disseminate information about EBD to their colleagues. ELAM's year-long program develops the professional and personal skills required to lead and manage in today's complex healthcare environment, with special attention to the unique challenges facing women in leadership positions. Over 700 senior women leaders have participated in the program since its inception in 1995. The program accepts a number of women professionals from disciplines outside medicine (dentistry, pharmacy, nursing) each year. For the current year (2012-13) Dr. Caroline Shiboski is a fellow in the program. The program reequies attending three workshops (two on the Drexel University campus) that total about three weeks of time, plus a significant amount of time for work on independent projects. The ADEA Leadership Institute is a year-long program designed to develop the nations most promising individuals that academic solicitations to become future leaders in dental and higher education. The program begins and ends with participation at workshops at the ADEA annual session and requires attendance at three workshops in various sites around the country in the intervening 12 months. For additional information, refer to the ADEA Leadership Institute website. For the 2011-12 year Dr. Mark Dellinges was an ADEA leadership Institute fellow.
These 2.5 day long workshops are typically dove-tailed onto the end of the AADR Annual Meeting. The AADR does not maintain a web site devoted to the Clinical Research Workshop. Members will receive announcements about the workshop, which typically accepts about 30 participants, a few months before the annual meeting.
The ITL, Institute for Teaching & Learning, is a product of a collaboration between the ADEA and the Academy for Academic Leadership (AAL). The overall goal of the program is to help participants refine their teaching skills and enhance their ability to interact with students as well as to develop other skills that will facilitate confidence, job satisfaction, and professional growth in the academic environment. The ITL program occupies 6.5 days of time in two phases (August, October) and is usually held on the campus of the University of North Carolina. For additional information refer to the ITL website. Applications are typically due by early August. Drs. Sheila Brear and Susan Hyde have participated in this program in the past.
This three-step program allows one to earn a Certificate and a Masters Degree in Dental Education by following 3 steps.
Step 1: attend the ADEA/AAL Institute for Teaching and Learning Program.
Step 2: complete the Dental Educator Certificate, available from the Academy for Academic Leadership jointly with University of the Pacific.
Step 3: Earn a Master of Arts In Education Degree, also awarded by the AAL and the University of the Pacific.

Chairs & Academic Administrators Management Program (CAAMP), run by the Academy for Academic Leadership (AAL)
The Chairs and Academic Administrators Management Program (CAAMP) is a 3-day workshop designed to give these uniquely positioned managers and leaders the skills and confidence to balance competing demands and priorities and manage diverse programs and people. The 2013 program will be held July 18-20, 2013, at the Emory Conference Center in Atlanta, Georgia. For additional information go to the CAAMP web site.
ADEA Summer Program for Emerging Academic Leaders, held in July in Maine
The ADEA Summer Program is a 3-1/2 day program of lectures, small group discussions, and independent assignments. This highly Interactive program is designed for junior faculty and covers topics such as leadership styles, team building, and time management that are essential to planning and implementing a successful academic career. The American Association for Dental Research is inviting applications from investigators for a sponsored award in clinical research in pariodontology. The Fellowship is in memory of William B. Clark, the late Professor of Oral Biology and Director of the Periodontal Research Center At the University of Florida. For additional details, go to the William B. Clark Fellowship website.
This award was established to provide national recognition for outstanding efforts to foster and promote research training and career development of students, trainees and junior faculty. It is intended to identify individuals at all levels of their career with an exemplary record of mentoring. For additional details go to their website.
IADR and GC Corporation invite applications from new/young investigators for a sponsored Fellowship in dental materials science. It is intended that the Fellow will spend up to six months at a research facility outside his/her institution and/or country. The Fellowship is awarded every two years. It is intended that the Fellowship will rotate around different IADR Divisions/Sections and, therefore, no Division/Section may receive more than one Fellowship in any six-year period. Preference will be given to applicants from regions with less developed research programs in the field of materials science. IADR E.W. Borrow Memorial Award - deadline for nominations is usually early in October
Nominations are invited for the 2013 IADR E.W. Borrow Memorial Award, which was established to recognize and stimulate research in oral health promotion for children, with a priority for caries prevention where fluoride in different formats is utilized. Selection will be based on the originality of contributions and record of achievement in the field of oral health promotion and on the significance of research carried out on the oral health of children. Basic research, applied clinical research, and clinical investigation will be considered for the award as well. At the time of nomination, the nominee should be actively engaged in the area of research for which the award is presented. Candidates MUST be IADR members. For more information, visit their website.
IADR Distinguished Service Award deadline is usually early in October
This Award is presented to an individual member of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) for outstanding instances of service to the Association or distinguished service over a period of time. The American Dental Education Association (ADEA)/Colgate-Palmolive Co. Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes dental educators who demonstrate exemplary standards and promote excellence in dental education through scholarship and innovation. The award is ultimately aimed at enriching educational experiences by generating intellectual excitement within dental institutions and programs. This commitment to excellence and the scholarship of teaching and learning may be demonstrated in any dental instructional setting, including classroom or laboratory instruction, clinical teaching or preceptorships, research and instructional mentoring, continuing education, community-based instructional settings, or electronically mediated teaching and learning experiences.
The American Dental Education Association (ADEA); the ADEA Council of Students, Residents, and Fellows; and Colgate-Palmolive Co. wish to recognize outstanding junior faculty who demonstrate excellence in teaching, research, and service and a commitment to dental education. An award of $25,000 to an institution and a dental educator team has demonstrated a commitment to excellence and innovation in the field of implant dentistry education.
CDA/Dugoni Faculty Award, apply January 1 - March 31
The Dugoni Faculty Award acknowledges and supports eligible faculty affiliated with the state's 6 dental schools for their exceptional leadership, innovation, collaboration, compassion, philanthropic spirit and integrity in dental education. It was developed to support individuals who contribute to the scholarly and creative activities of California dental students.
Unselfishly volunteering time, resources, and professional skills is a commendable act that bridges the barriers to care for underserved populations and makes a difference in others' lives. Established in 2008, the CDA Foundation Humanitarian Award recognizes California dentists who have distinguished themselves through a lifetime of outstanding, unselfish leadership and contributions to fellow human beings in the field of dentistry
