UCSF Dental Students' Honduras Spring Break
A UCSF Dentistry team of dental students, including Hye-Yoon Choi, Elizabeth Kyurkchyan, Charlene Rocha, Marella Tagatac, and Tram Vu, and faculty member Dr. Avelino Silva, traveled to Honduras over Spring Break to provide much-needed basic oral health care and screenings to populations that typically have little or no access to dental services.
Dr. Silva thanked the team for joining him in Honduras to deliver humanitarian services to a local rural community: "In our three days of clinical work, we were able to provide dozens of children with oral hygiene instruction and fluoride treatment. Also, children, teenagers and adults were able to receive dental cleanings, fillings and teeth extractions. We completed over 120 extractions in just a few days. The community was very grateful for our services and you should feel good about your contributions."
Dental student Tram Vu echoed the sentiments of the group, writing "It was an amazing experience! Not only did I gain more clinical experiences, but I got to work with many wonderful people and provide dental services to the underserved community. This trip was very fulfilling and my passion to provide services to the underserved population definitely grew stronger."
"I said to you that going to Honduras on a humanitarian mission was something that you personally had to experience to fully appreciate the kindness and hospitality of the Honduran people, the innocence and playfulness of their children, their savory food and fabulous coffee" concluded Dr. Silva. "Keep your memories close to you and you will cherish them."
