Lauren Castro Wins Krevans Award for Patient Care
Dr. Lauren Castro, resident in UCSF Dentistry's Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) department, has been given the Krevans Award for Patient Care. The Krevans Award is named for Julius R. Krevans, M.D., the fifth chancellor of UCSF, and is given annually to one intern in each specialty at San Francisco General Hospital, "recognizing excellence in patient care, as exemplified by clinical competence, professional conduct, compassion for patients and outstanding interaction with all levels of staff, including peers."
During Dr. Krevans' tenure UCSF saw its first Nobel Prize winners, J. Michael Bishop, a future chancellor, and Harold Varmus, and played a critical role in the development of the biotechnology industry. Under Krevans' leadership, UCSF attracted many female and underrepresented minority students to careers in the health professions.
OMFS Program Director and Associate Clinical Professor Brian Bast, DMD, MD: "Lauren has spent 8 months of her intern year at San Francisco General Hospital. She has distinguished herself as a hard working and compasionate surgeon and patient advocate. Dr. Castro completed her undergraduate training in psychology at the University of California at Berkeley. She went on to complete her dental degree at Tufts University, where she recieved the American Dental Association Minority Scholarship, the Tufts Merit Scholarship, and a National Science Foundation Fellowship. She completed dental mission trips to Peru and Nicaragua. Dr. Castro will complete her medical degree at the University of California at Davis, and will return to UCSF to complete her General Surgery and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training. We are incredibly proud to have Lauren join our department, and we are confident that she will continue to excel throughout her residency and career."
