UCSF Dentistry's Inaugural Global Oral Health Symposium

May 24, 2011

"On Monday, May 23rd, 2011, we saw the beginning, at UCSF School of Dentistry, of a robust new initiative to greatly expand global collaboration among those seeking to understand and effectively address oral health challenges" said John S. Greenspan, BSc, BDS, PhD, FRCPath, Associate Dean for Global Oral Health, of the UCSF School of Dentistry's Inaugural Global Oral Health Symposium.  Says Greenspan in a note of welcome leading program, the initiative "has as its mission the improvement of oral and craniofacial health worldwide.

The goals for the Global Oral Health program include building, strengthening and coordinating our activities in global oral health, developing and supporting programs of excellence in global oral health sciences and international health within the School, and interacting with UCSF campus, the University of California as a whole, and other initiatives in global health."

Eight broad oral health problems at which the Global Oral Health initiative's efforts are generally aimed were outlined: adult and pediatric caries; periodontal disease; oropharyngeal cancer; infectious diseases such as herpes and HIV/AIDS oral lesions; systemic and mucocutaneous diseases; trauma; craniofacial and dental developmental defects; and dry mouth, including Sjögren’s syndrome and drug-induced dry mouth.

Hosted at locations around UCSF's Parnassus Heights campus, the day-long event began with a morning Educational Programs Discussion Group in the Library's new Teaching and Learning Center, hosted by Dr. Greenspan and featuring several of the day's distinguished guests and presenters, including UCSF Dentistry faculty, and joined by dental students Benjamin Chaffee, Jonathan Collins, Antonio Diaz, Todor Stavrev, Daniel Yacoob, who gave oral presentations to the group. Following a tour of the Teaching and Learning Center by Dr. Gwen Essex, guests were given a tour of the UCSF Dental Center at 707 Parnassus by Dr. Denly Herbert.

The symposium opened in the afternoon with a welcome and remarks by UCSF Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann, MD, and Dean John D.B. Featherstone, MSc, PhD, as well as Dr. Greenspan, who also chaired the first of the two sessions.
