D1 Simiade Fabiyi Awarded National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program Scholarship

September 23, 2011

FabiyiFirst-year UCSF Dentistry student Simiade Fabiyi, Class of 2015, has been granted a National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program scholarship, for which she is "committed to serve one year for each year of support (minimum of two years service) at an approved site in a high-need Health Professional Shortage Area" soon after her graduation.  Scholars compete for employment at the approved service sites of their choice from a listing of job vacancies in their discipline and specialty. The NHSC helps Scholars select a compatible service site and pays for travel to and from interviews.

Fabiyi was made aware of the program on the day she interviewed as an applicant to the School, "but there was so much information presented that it didn't 'click' until later."  She realized that it was a perfect fit for her practice plans post-graduation: "The kinds of underserved patient populations I want to serve, and the emphasis on preventative care" all appealed to her.  She found the program "very welcoming, as everyone has been here, at UCSF."  Contextualizing it in her role as a dental student now, and eventually as a dental practitioner, she made the observation that "there is a time to be a learner, a teacher, and a leader - and a time to serve", and she looks forward to being of service when she completes her studies.

Fabiyi plans to attend the upcoming National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program New Scholar Conference, which will be held in New Orleans, LA October 27-29, 2011.
