Collins and Dadgar-Yeganeh Detail Innovative International Pre-Dental Day at UCSF Dentistry
UCSF School of Dentistry sent two third year students, Jonathan Collins and Amir Dadgar-Yeganeh, to present a poster at the California Dental Association (CDA) Convention in Anaheim on Friday, May 4, 2012.
Their table clinic presentation centered on a unique American Student Dental Association (ASDA) event for international pre-dental students, initiated at UCSF. The two students presented the school event as part of the "Community" category of posters, and were one of dozens of posters presented by students from dental schools throughout California.
In October 2011, ASDA at UCSF pioneered a unique and innovative project designed to better prepare international applicants for the dental school interview process. The International Dentist Program (IDP) Pre-Dental Day was a one-day event consisting of presentations, discussions, mock interviews, workshops, and networking activities. Current UCSF dental student volunteers were recruited to help the applicants become more comfortable conversing with Americans in a professional setting. The event hosted most of the UCSF Dentistry International Dentist Program (IDP) applicants who at that time had interviews scheduled at UCSF. In the newly accepted IDP class, 22 of 24 class members are individuals who attended this event.
The IDP Pre-Dental Day is the first one held at UCSF, and is likely the first one in the country tailored specifically to meet the needs of the international dentist programs. It will continue on an annual basis at UCSF, and will be strongly encouraged at other dental schools.
