Smith Receives Dickson Emeritus Professor Award; UCSF Orofacial Center Accreditation
Richard Smith, DDS, a former director of the UCSF Orofacial Center, has received a 2012-2013 Dickson Emeritus Professor Award from the UCSF Office of the Chancellor, a relatively new honor meant to encourage emeritus faculty projects.
Says M. Anthony Pogrel, DDS, MD, Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: " ... he has continued to devote himself tirelessly to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and the Dental School as a whole. He continues to teach in the predoctoral curriculum and arranges for continued accreditation of our surgery center. It was, therefore, no surprise whatsoever that UCSF Dentistry Dean Featherstone should turn to Richard for ideas regarding a credentialing and privileging process within the School. Richard has now given considerable thought to this idea, and this award would enable him to lay the groundwork for a system of credentialing and privileging that he could then present to the Dean to take forward for implementation across the School as a whole."
Dr. Smith received additional good news this week: a letter saying that "It is a pleasure to inform you that the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc. (AAAHC) Accreditation Committee has awarded UCSF Orofacial Center (dba UCSF Oral and Facial Surgery Center), a three-year term of accreditation."
Granting accreditation reflects confidence, based on evidence from a recent survey that a facililty has met, and will continue to demonstrate throughout the accreditation term, "the attributes of an accreditable organization as reflected in the standards found in the Accreditation Handbook for Ambulatory Care. The dedication and effort necessary for an organization to be accredited is substantial and the compliance with those standards implies a commitment to continual self-evaluation and continuous improvement." From the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc. (www.aaahc.org)
"This is a wonderful achievement for the School and department. Three years is the maximum accreditation given by AAAHC, and D-1201 was not given any suggestions or recommendations. It means we meet or exceed all national standards for an outpatient surgical facility." - Dr. Pogrel.
