UCSF Dentistry Free Screenings at Sunday Streets

July 23, 2012

UCSF Faculty and Residents at Sunday StreetsUCSF News Center - UCSF School of Dentistry residents performed free dental screenings for dozens of children during a sunny Bayview Opera House Sunday Streets recently.

As part of the Family Health and Wellness Fair, seven UCSF Pediatric Dentistry residents - Carrie Tsai, Yu-Hsing Kao, Jeremy Horst, Sheila Nguyen, Alexandra Malebranche, Amita Ruehe, and Will Liou, assisted by dental student volunteers - conducted oral exams and applied fluoride varnishes for children on a walk-in basis.  The Attending was Orapin Horst from UCSF Dentistry Endodontics.

The five-hour event, done in partnership with the California State Assembly and San Francisco Board of Supervisors, drew a total of 89 kids. District 10 Supervisor Malia Cohen brought her niece in for a screening.

Denti-Cal advisors also were on hand to educate families about oral health. Tooth decay is one of the most common childhood diseases – five times more prevalent than asthma – and early detection is key to making sure children don’t lose a permanent tooth to decay.

The dental exams were part of UCSF’s public mission of “advancing health worldwide.” From free children’s health screenings to innovative partnerships attacking the roots of poor health care, UCSF is committed to serving its community on a local and global level.

"Our main purpose was to connect unserved children in the community to oral health resources available in the community, particularly including DentiCal and the pediatric dental clinics at the UCSF Dental Center" said Pediatric Dentistry resident Jeremy Horst.

"Thanks again for the job well done, and for making a difference in the lives of these children" says UCSF Dentistry professor Thuan Le in an e-mail to volunteers.
