Dr. Kirkland will be directly responsible to the Dean of the School for the oversight of all clinical affairs, including the direct management of all predoctoral clinics through administrative and supervisory staff. He will interact closely with the Associate Deans, department chairs and managers, as well as specialty program directors to coordinate all clinical activities in the School and to maximize the excellence and effectiveness of every program. He will represent the School in clinical matters on campus, within the state, nationally and internationally.
Dr. Kirkland is a Health Sciences Clinical Professor in the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences at UCSF. He was awarded his DDS from UCSF in 1983 and later completed a certificate in Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD). He was director of the AEGD program at UCSF from 1995 to 2004, and has also been the Director of the Buchanan Dental Center since 2000. Dr. Kirkland has been closely involved with the International Dentist Program since its inception, and has been the Director of the Program since 2005. He is a past president of the local chapter of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society.
The duties of the Associate Dean for Clinic Administration, currently held by Dr. Joel White, will be incorporated within the new position.
