Dental Student Places Second in CDA Competition

Second-year dental student Jay Gupta took second place in the Scientific Category of the California Dental Association's Student Table Clinic Competition at the Spring, 2006 Scientific Session in Anaheim, April 28-30. The award carries a $400 prize.

Gupta, who is mentored by Dr. Brian Schmidt, Associate Professor in the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, is studying pain caused by oral cancer. His presentation, titled "Endothelin-1 Induces Oral Cancer Pain," entails research into the causes of oral cancer pain. "In our study we demonstrated that endothelin-1 is responsible for oral cancer pain," Gupta said. "The results of our study suggest that blockade of endothelin-1 might serve as an avenue for the development of an effective analgesic in patients with oral cancer."

Gupta will compete at the table clinic competition at the American Dental Association's Scientific Session in Las Vegas, October 16-19, 2006.

UCSF Dental Students Excel at ADEA Conference

A group of six UCSF School of Dentistry students comprising the School's chapter were awarded with the 2006 American Dental Education Association's (ADEA) Council of Students Innovative Chapter Award at the 83rd Annual Session & Exhibition in Orlando, Florida in March, 2006.

The six students were:

Francesca Artiga (D2)
Gina Betita (D3)

Garrett Criswell (D2)
Marissa Dangaran (D1)
Julio Escobar (D2)
Bunly Pel (D1)

Also at the ADEA Annual Session, three pre-Doctoral students were elected to national positions within the Council of Students (COS). The primary function of the Council of Students is to represent its constituency within the Association and at the member institutions. The Council recommends to the Board of Directors how the interests of the council's constituency might be represented through the federal legislative and regulatory processes, and it functions to exchange information among its members, with other ADEA component groups, and among member institutions. The Council meets at annual sessions.

Second-year student Garrett Criswell was elected as the 2006-2007 Member At Large, and will sit on the Administrative Board, which is the governing body of the Council of Students. Second-year student Julio Escobar was elected as one of two Pacific Regional Representatives, which entails serving as the representative voice for the nine schools in the Pacific Region. Third-year student Gina Betita was selected as the Center Group Leader for Equity and Diversity, and will spearhead student initiatives related to increasing diversity among dental educators and students nationwide.

Faculty/Staff Triumph Again in Annual Basketball Game

The dominance of the School of Dentistry faculty and staff team over the students continued at the recent annual basketball game, won by the faculty/staff 62-58. The April 25 matchup, played in Millberry Gym, pitted fourth-year dental students against a faculty/staff juggernaut that has gone 10-1, according to many sources, against their D4 opponents in recent years. The taut contest featured many lead changes and a stirring comeback by the faculty/staff team, according to team reserve swingman and spokesperson Joel White. The faculty were led by manager Larry Jenson, and player-coaches Denly Herbert and Bud Silverman. At press time, no faculty/staff team members had been contacted by the Golden State Warriors for a tryout.

Renovated Cell & Tissue Biology Lab Wins Sustainable Design Award

The recently renovated Health Sciences-West (HSW) sixth floor lab run by the Department of Cell & Tissue Biology (CTB) has won an award for "Best Overall Sustainable Design" in the Higher Education Energy Efficiency Partnership Best Practices in Sustainable Design Competition.

This competition is hosted each year by the Higher Education Energy Efficiency Partnership, and is meant to highlight the achievements that University of California and California State University campuses have made through innovative and effective energy efficiency projects.

The renovation, funded by donor Nina Pera, the National Center for Research Resources (a division of the NIH), and the Chancellor's office, occurred between February, 2002 and May, 2004. The HSW-6 lab was designed by BlakeDrucker Architects in Oakland.

The lab space houses these CTB investigators and their staff: Diane Barber, Rik Derynck and Torsten Wittmann, who was recently recruited to the department. A search is ongoing for the remaining opening for a tenure-track faculty member. Caroline Damsky, who directed the writing of the NIH grant, and moved into the space when it first opened in 2004, has moved to the Dean's office as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
