UCSF School of Dentistry Celebrates 125th Anniversary

Under the banner of 125 Years of Innovation, the UCSF School of Dentistry celebrated on Saturday, July 15th with a daylong Continuing Education lecture program, followed by a wine and cheese reception.

The day was co-sponsored by Delta Dental of California.

The diverse program included presentations by Dr. Alton M. Lacy of the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences (PRDS) on new restorative products and strategies, a survey of current stem cell science by Cell and Tissue Biology professor and Fisher Laboratory director Dr. Susan Fisher, and a discussion of implants for single tooth replacement by Dr. Arun Sharma of PRDS.

Dean Charles Bertolami commented on the particular appropriateness of observing the anniversary in the context of context of a Continuing Education program, noting that the School was established in 1881 to further the professional education of practitioners of dentistry.

The reception, characterized as "a wonderful event" by Associate Dean for Education Dorothy Perry, took place in the expansive Fisher Atrium of UCSF's Mission Bay Community Center, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta.

School of Dentistry-led Sjögren's Group Meets in DC

The UCSF-led Sjögren's International Collaborative Clinical Alliance (SICCA) held an Investigators Meeting in Washington DC on April 26, 2006.

The Alliance, which includes research groups in Beijing, Buenos Aires, Copenhagen, Kanazawa and San Francisco, is directed by UCSF Dentistry professors Troy Daniels and John Greenspan.

SICCA is working toward establishing standardized diagnostic criteria for the disease and building an international registry of uniform clinical data and biospecimens, available to scientists all over the world to further the understanding and treatment of Sjögren's syndrome.

Dr. Greenspan commented that "investigators and staff from five countries with very different approaches are working so well together," adding that "the opportunity to put together such a large group of patients and controls is opening up exciting new avenues of inquiry into the genetic and other causes of this widespread and troublesome disease."

Dental Students Triumph in ASUC Blood Drive

The UCSF School of Dentistry was dominant at this year's ASUC blood drive, with faculty, staff, and a remarkable fifty student donations far outpacing the combined contributions of the schools of Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing.

Jean Katz of the UCSF / Mt. Zion Blood Center was enthusiastic in a letter to Dean Bertolami, remarking that the selflessness of the School's students had helped to save 120 lives. Katz was particularly effusive in her praise for Dentistry's Gwen Essex, Associate Clinical Professor in PRDS, who as organizer and prime mover behind the School's effort "did more than coordinate the blood drive; she was a positive influence on students and on our staff."

Gwen reciprocated in her admiration for Katz and the Blood Center's "outstanding" staff.

Barbra Richardson Concludes 35 years in Dental Admissions

Barbra Richardson was joined by colleagues, students and family to say a joyful and occasionally emotional farewell to the Office of Admissions at the School of Dentistry, a second home since 1971.

At her retirement party on June 6th in the Golden Gate Room at Millberry Union, Barbra was joined friends old and new for a buffet, followed by tributes, reminiscences, and cake.

Among other pursuits, Barbra's plans for the immediate future include volunteering at the American Conservatory Theatre and local museums, and sometimes "Just doing nothing."

Farewell to Dr. Charles Alexander

Students, faculty and staff bid a festive farewell to Dr. Charles Alexander, Associate Dean of Admissions and director of the Office of Student Affairs, on the afternoon of August 8th.

Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Dr. Eugene Washington thanked Dr. Alexander for his ten years of exceptional service to the School and to UCSF. Dr. Alexander described his work as a "collaborative effort," emphasizing that his focus is always on the needs of students. Many of those students, including current and former participants in the Post-Baccalaureate program, brought gifts and good wishes.

The School and the campus community join Dean Bertolami in wishing Dr. Alexander success as he steps into his new role as Associate Vice Provost for Student Diversity at UCLA.

Dentistry Wins the Battle of the Schools

The School of Dentistry prevailed for the fourth consecutive year in the annual Battle of the Schools competition April 6th and April 8th at Millberry Union.

In athletic trials that ranged from fortune cookie hunting to the more physically demanding table tennis, volleyball and basketball matches, dental students topped their closest competitors (Pharmacy) by ten points overall.

Prizes included a trophy and a Bay cruise for the victorious Dentistry athletes.
