PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The General Practice Residency at UCSF is a 12-month program that is fully accredited by the ADA’s Commission on Dental Accreditation for four residents per year. It is a demanding curriculum with an emphasis on hospital dentistry. Rotations through specialty clinics include oral surgery, oral medicine, and orofacial pain/TMD. In addition, block rotations include general medicine and anesthesia. By exposure to a wide range of patients, the resident will learn management of patients with medical complexities and behavior disturbances. Residents will also have extensive training in anesthesia. Didactic instruction includes seminars, labs, workshops, literature review, case presentations, lectures and demonstrations. The program is intended to prepare dentists to treat patients with special needs in a clinical or hospital setting. Residents also have an on-call commitment.
The program begins July 1 of each year. Prior to the program, residents are required to attend a one-day hospital housestaff orientation. Two options are usually offered: one mid June, one in late June. Candidates area also required to provide documentation of current ACLS and BLS.
Upon successful completion of the program, residents will receive a certificate of completion and are eligible for applying for a dental license in any state that accepts licensure by residency. This includes California.
Matched applicants to the UCSF GPR have the opportunity to apply to Master Degree programs in various areas. Each program has a separate admissions application and all require the GRE. If accepted into a Masters program, a minimal amount of coursework will be completed during the GPR year; all other coursework will need to be completed subsequent to the completion of the GPR. The General Practice Residency is part of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the School of Dentistry.

Four residents are accepted to the General Practice Residency each year. Applicants with an interest in hospital-based dentistry are strongly considered.
The Admissions Committee will review all eligible applications and will invite the most qualified candidates for an interview.
Committee action results in a ranking order by which applicants will be matched. Matched candidates will be offered a provisional admission pending the submission to our office of all original official transcripts and board scores. All this documentation will be verified and final admission will be granted to the candidate.
