The University of California, San Francisco conducts a General Practice Residency designed to meet the requirements of the Council on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. The General Practice Residency, located on the University of California San Francisco Campus, is a one-year program offering training in all aspects of Hospital Dentistry, with an emphasis on comprehensive general dental care in a "come and go" surgery center environment
The training year begins in July.
There are a maximum of four funded positions available for each year.
It is recommended that each resident obtain a license to practice dentistry in the State of California during the year of training.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
To provide residents with the necessary didactic and clinical experiences that will enable them to confidently provide "state of the art" comprehensive dental care to the broadest possible spectrum of the population.
To Provide advance training in hospital and operating room procedures, including admission procedures, history and physical evaluation, laboratory evaluation, consultations, emergency care, pre- and postoperative care, and inpatient and outpatient surgery.
To enhance the resident's ability to make sound clinical judgments.
To provide dental services for segments of the population which are currently undeserved. These patients include: medically compromised, mentally and physically challenged, pediatric, adult and geriatric individuals
To provide training in quality assurance protocols and risk management techniques
To motivate trainees to be continuous students, to always strive for quality education and self improvement
To develop the resident's ability to critically review the literature
To enhance the resident's diagnostic and treatment planning skills
ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

1) PASS (Postdoctoral Application Support Service)

SELECTION PROCESS
The Admissions Committee will review all eligible applications and will recommend an interview to the best candidates. Factors taken into consideration in the selection process are academic background, National Board scores, research experience, and letters of recommendation, personal statement and interview.
Committee action results in a ranking order by which applicants will be matched. Selected candidates will be offered a Provisional admission pending the submission to our office of all original official transcripts and board scores. All this documentation will be verified and final admission will be granted to the candidate.
RESIDENCY GUIDELINES
Tuition and Stipends: Stipends are subject to annual review, but the annual stipend for PGY 1 residents was approximately $38,100.00.
Registration materials must be completed each quarter in order for a Resident Identification Card to be issued and loans to be deferred.
Vacation and sick leave are granted at the discretion of the Director of Residency training. At the present time, residents are entitled to two weeks paid vacation per year, which should not normally be taken together and should not be taken on off-service rotations. Sick leave with pay is granted at the discretion of the Director of Residency Training.
Practice Privileges and other activities outside the education program: In general, residents are expected to devote 100% of their professional activities to the program. Permission to carry out professional activities outside the program can only be granted in exceptional circumstances by the Director of the Residency Training in conjunction with the Head of the Department.
Professional Liability Coverage: The residents receive professional liability insurance to cover them for all activities related to the educational program. As registered students, they are covered by the University of California Malpractice Insurance, which provides coverage for all malpractice claims, and in normal circumstances, will cover all other employment related claims including punitive damages which are examined on an individual basis.
EXTERNSHIPS
Externships are available for the individuals who are interested in this program. They are available July-October. During your externship you will be able to see first hand the programs rotations and lectures, meet the faculty and get an all over feel of the program. CLINICAL FACILITIES: OFFICE & RESEARCH SPACE
University of California:
- The Oral and Facial Surgery Center, located in the Dental Clinic Building is an 8 operatory facility. This is where students, residents, and faculty treat ambulatory patients. This Center is accredited by the AAAHC.
- The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic, located in the Medical Science Building is where hospital patients and medically compromised dental patients are seen. This is a newly renovated 6-chair facility.
- The UCSF Ambulatory Surgery Center is fully equipped for general dental procedures, including digital x-ray and fiber-optic illumination.
- The Center for Orofacial Pain is located in the School of Dentistry. The center has full diagnostic and treatment capacity including physical therapy.
- UCSF Oral Medicine Clinic is fully equipped for diagnosis and treatment.
San Francisco General Hospital (County Facility for San Francisco):
The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery /Hospital Dental Clinic is a modern fully equipped 8-operatory facility that provides outpatient and inpatient surgical services.
Veteran's Administration Medical Center:
The Veteran's Administration Hospital is a center where oral and maxillofacial surgeons provide inpatient and outpatient dental care in a modern 3-operatory surgical facility. GPR residents rotate for to the VA hospital for Physical Diagnosis training.
Emergency Room Care:
Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery resident, GPR residents and faculty provide 24- hour emergency coverage for the Moffitt/Long Hospital for all Oral & Maxillofacial emergencies.
