PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) is now accepting applications for admission to a new oral & maxillofacial pathology residency beginning July 1, 2008. This program has received initial accreditation from the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation. This 36-month residency is based at the UCSF Medical Center, a recognized world leader in healthcare delivery, research and education. One resident per year will be accepted. Upon program completion, graduates will be eligible for board certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.
This program draws on the rich and diverse academic and clinical strengths of UCSF and the UCSF Medical Center including the UCSF Oral Pathology Diagnostic Laboratory which has a 40-year history of service to the dental and medical communities of California and the western US. Additional strengths come from integration with the UCSF Department of Pathology and close clinical, scientific and administrative interactions with other UCSF Medical Center patient care settings including the UCSF Oral Medicine clinic, the Departments of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, and Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. Residency training takes place primarily at the UCSF Oral Pathology Diagnostic Service supplemented with year-long training in anatomic pathology within the UCSF Department of Pathology. Rotations in dermatopathology, hematopathology, cytopathology, laboratory medicine, clinical oral pathology (oral medicine) and oral oncology provide important foundations for clinical excellence. Opportunities for developing leading research with world-class scientists to generate new knowledge are also an integral part of the residency.
In addition, all residents will have the opportunity to enroll in graduate education leading to a PhD degree in either fundamental (basic) sciences or clinical & translational sciences. The combined oral & maxillofacial pathology residency and PhD degree requires 7 years to complete. Expected resident salary stipends begin at $42,525 and increase each year of the residency program. Benefits are also provided. PhD candidates will receive salary support for graduate education through a T32 NIH funding mechanism.
UCSF is an equal opportunity institution: women and underrepresented minorities are encouraged to apply.
