PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Postgraduate Program in Pediatric Dentistry is a full-time, 36 month course of study leading to a certificate in pediatric dentistry and an M.S. degree in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences. Appropriately qualified students also have the option of pursuing a PhD degree in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences. The goal of this program is to produce highly trained specialists who will assume leadership roles in academic pediatric dentistry or private practice. The program also seeks to stimulate interest in careers combining clinical practice and research. In addition to the first class academic and clinic opportunites afforded at the San Francisco campus, the affiliation with Children's Hospital Medical Center, Oakland, provides a wealth of experience in treating pediatric dental trauma in the emergency department as well as the child with special health care needs.

This program fully satisfies the educational requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

A Certificate of Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry is awarded upon satisfactory completion of the postdoctoral program. Graduates are educationally eligible for examination by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

CURRICULUM

Instruction in all areas of Pediatric Dentistry is provided through lectures, seminars and clinical training in outpatient clinic and hospital settings. The hospital and surgery center operating rooms provide intensive experience in treating patients with special needs under general anesthesia. While emphasizing the importance of the basic and clinical sciences, the program stresses the relationship of pediatric dentistry to other areas of pediatric health care delivery. All postgraduate professional students will complete a specially tailored core curriculum that includes courses in biostatistics, cariology, biomaterials, developmental biology, oral pathology, behavioral sciences, pharmacology and medical ethics.

This fundamental and didactic instruction provides background for and complements clinical rotations in pediatrics, anesthesia, emergency, out-patient care and orthodontics. The associated departmental Divisions of Craniofacial Anomalies, Oral Medicine, Orthodontics and Periodontics encourage strong ties and interdisciplinary education.

Participation in predoctoral student teaching is an integral part of the clinical program.

Depending upon the tract followed, all students are required to complete either a master's level research project under the supervision of a thesis advisor and committee, in accordance with the guidelines of the University of California Graduate Division, or a properly documented clinical research project resulting in a manuscript ready for submission to a refereed journal.

FACILITIES

A pediatric dental outpatient clinic is located within the School of Dentistry. This clinic contains supplies and equipment for comprehensive care of pediatric patients. Dental care for children with physical, emotional, mental, and genetic disorders frequently requires a specialized approach in a hospital setting. This is readily available at the associated facilities of UCSF and Children's Hospital Medical Center, Oakland. Dental care is integrated with all appropriate medical specialties and the patients of all these facilities provide the student with an excellent exposure to challenging clinical problems.
