| ACADEMIC POLICIES
Progress Toward Degree
Degrees are awarded only upon satisfactory completion of the degree program. Most students complete the curriculum and receive the degree without delay. Very few students have significant academic difficulty. Students are expected to attend all classes and to perform the coursework satisfactorily. Instructors are sole judges of students’ abilities to perform the coursework.
Grades and Grade Points
All courses in the predoctoral curriculum are graded Pass (P)/No Pass(NP). Courses in the third and fourth years have Honors designations for outstanding performance. Courses that extend over more than one quarter are graded Satisfactory Pass (SP) or Unsatisfactory Pass (UP) until the last quarter, when the P/NP grades are awarded for the entire course.
Academic Support Services
Individual tutors are provided as needed throughout the year, without cost.
Instruction in study skills is also offered to those students who need and wish such instruction.
Student Status
The records of all students are reviewed by a class-specific Student Status Committee at the end of each quarter. The committee's decisions may be promotion; academic warning; probation; or repetition of certain courses, an entire quarter, or a full year. Also, this committee may recommend that students be barred from registration if their work is of such low quality that their continued attendance in the school is inappropriate. The committee may also recommend that further registration be denied students who have failed to exhibit the physical, moral, and mental qualities necessary for the practice of dentistry.
Transcripts of Record
Upon formal application to the Office of Admission and Registrar, students may have issued on their behalf official transcripts of record of work taken at UCSF. The fee is $5 per copy.
A hold may be placed against issuance of a transcript because of failure to respond to official University notices, and/or because of outstanding financial obligations to the University.
Notice of Withdrawal or Leave of Absence
Permission for a leave of absence or withdrawal from the university may be granted to students in good standing who do not wish to retain their present class status. Forms are available from the Office of Admission and Registrar. First-year students are not granted leaves of absence, and must instead withdraw and reapply in the regular admission process to gain readmission. Students who seek a leave of absence and are receiving financial aid must contact the Student Financial Services Office for full information before making the necessary arrangements. For further information and for counselling on these matters, please contact the Student Academic Records unit in the School of Dentistry, located in room D 4010.
Readmission
Students formerly registered in the School of Dentistry who have not been registered for a quarter or more must file an application for readmission and pay a nonrefundable $40 fee. The appropriate form may be obtained in the Office of Admission and Registrar. Students must also submit official transcripts of any college work attempted while on leave from the University. These transcripts should be sent directly to the Office Admissions and Recruitment.
A former student seeking readmission to the School of Dentistry must first obtain approvals from the Dean and the Student Health Service. Additional approvals may also be required from the Admissions Committee, Faculty Council, and Academic Vice Chancellor. Any student seeking readmission may be required to repeat part or all of the curriculum, as determined by the faculty.
