Decision-Making from Extraction to Implant: A Periodontal Perspective

Friday October 9, 2009

What You Will Learn

The success of dental implant therapy has forever changed dentistry. The predictability of dental implants makes them a highly desirable form of tooth replacement. As a result, the demand for dental implants to replace missing or failing teeth continues to rise as patients seek natural, esthetic results. Materials and techniques have evolved and expanded tremendously over the past two decades. Clinicians now have many options available to them for the surgical management of implants and implant site development. The demand for ideal implant esthetics and an overwhelming variety of options presents practitioners with many difficult questions regarding the best approach to therapy. When to extract? When to place the implant? When to graft extraction sockets? What materials to use? This presentation will describe an evidence-based biological approach to the management of implant site development. This decision-making process is critical to the esthetics and the long-term success of restorations. Risk factors will be presented that provide important guidelines and rationale for all aspects from periodontal diagnosis to implant supported tooth replacement. Recent trends, techniques and technologies will be presented with lessons learned from a periodontist’s perspective.

This course will use case presentations that illustrate treatment decisions. 3D scans and treatment planning software that aid in proper diagnosis and improve results will be demonstrated.

Lecture Objectives:

  • Experience and appreciate the value of 3D diagnostic imaging in the management of extractions, bone augmentation and implant placement.

  • Evaluate the parameters that effect the esthetic outcome of tooth replacement with implants.

  • Determine when immediate implants are indicated.

  • Discuss risk factors for Periodontitis in implant patients.
