Implants: The Dental Auxiliaries Perspective

2009 Dental Hygiene Symposium

Saturday, November 7, 2009

What You Will Learn

The roles of the dental hygienist and dental assistant are increasingly important to long term management of dental implant patients. This course is designed specifically for dental auxiliaries to dispel the common misconceptions and myths about dental implants and provide evidence-based practice recommendations. The speakers will address some commonly asked questions: What do you gain from probing implants? What armamentarium should be used? Are ultrasonic instruments acceptable alternatives? Participants will learn specific strategies for the prevention of peri-implant gingivitis and peri-implant osteitis. Home care will be discussed including both mechanical and adjunctive procedures. Clinical cases and discussion will be used to illustrate various therapies for dental implants.

Learning Objectives:

• Understand the biological basis of osseointegration

• Identify various types of implant restorations

• Recognize the signs and symptoms of failing dental implants

• Create appropriate maintenance and recall regimens.

• Define how the dental hygienist and dental assistant can create a practice environment to support patients with dental implants

• List the types of dental implant instruments that are appropriate for use on dental implant surfaces

• Review the use of dental radiographs for monitoring dental implants
