Wendell Wylie Memorial Lecture
Conebeam Computed Tomography:
Use and Misuse

Friday, June 20, 2008

Conebeam computed tomography (CBCT) has been at the forefront of the specialty of Orthodontics for the past few years. Use this new tool has confirmed many traditional treatment methods. In addition, the 3D imaging capacity it provides gives the clinician an unprecedented amount of detail and allows us to re-evaluate treatment modalities. It also brings up many questions including: Does CBCT provide a diagnostic advantage over standard cephalometric x-rays? What will this mean in the future? How will Orthodontic practice change?

Dr. Caruso will discuss the need to reevaluate common practices and treatment effects using this new tool. Participants will learn how CBCT is used in treatment planning for contemporary orthodontics.

Specific topics to be covered include:
  • Differences of cone beam (CBCT) and common spiral CT

  • Current possibilities of diagnosis with CBCT

  • How CBCT is used in a university setting
Joseph Caruso, DDS, MS, MPH is Chairman of the Orthodontic program at Loma Linda University. He served as Chair and Graduate Program director from 1997 until October 2007. He is a diplomate of the ABO, and a fellow in both the American College of Dentistry and the International College of Dentists. He was responsible for installing the first CBCT machine in the U.S. at LLU in June 2001 and worked with the California State regulatory agency to license CBCT for use by dentists. He has lectured to Orthodontists, Prosthodontists, Periodontists, and Implantologists on the advantages of conebeam in their respective specialties.
