The following is a list of expectations for a child born with a cleft lip only. Although each child is unique, this is intended to give a general idea of what to expect:

  • An infant with cleft lip only may successfully breastfeed.
  • A hearing test is recommended in case ventilation tubes need to be placed in the ears at the time of lip surgery.
  • Lip surgery will take place around 10 weeks of age (or at 10 lbs).
  • Surgery takes about 2-3 hours and the infant usually remains in the hospital one night.
  • A revision of the lip surgery, if needed, would be recommended prior to beginning school.
  • Orthodontic treatment (braces) may or may not be necessary in early adolescence.
  • A child with a cleft lip only is unlikely to have significant speech difficulties.
  • A child with a cleft lip may encounter social and emotional challenges unique to this condition. Support organizations and resources are available for children and their families (see Support Information).
