The UCSF School of Dentistry has many wonderful stories to tell about unequalled academic and clinical excellence, extraordinary research at the frontiers of science, honored public service and a tradition of giving back, and great work of all kinds by a community of students, faculty, staff and alumni, with literally global reach and impact.

I'd like to ask you, the School community, to help me write the story.

In this time of transition and opportunity, under the leadership of Interim Dean John Featherstone, our School enjoys tremendous prestige as it carries forward the positive legacy of Dean Bertolami and his predecessors. Great things are happening and you're the ones making them happen, but too often, they're not known to the wider world.

Help make them known. Tell me about what's not being covered in School publications, and in School news, on our website (dentistry.ucsf.edu), and elsewhere. Tell me about what you think merits more attention and emphasis. Share with me your stories, your photographs, and your enthusiasm for your profession and for the difference you're making.

I've been the School's communications manager for a year now, yet despite my physical visibility at 6'10" (giving Drs Herbert and Kirkland a bit of competition) and despite the prevalance of my work (the 2007 School of Dentistry magazine, electronic newsletters, and other publications), it's still unclear to many who I am and what my role is. I look forward to changing that through even closer collaboration with all of you to write the great, ongoing story of the UCSF School of Dentistry.

Thanks and regards,

David Hand
