D3 Sheila Nguyen, 2008-09 Board President of the ADEA Student Chapter at UCSF, reports: "Fourteen UCSF dental students attended, to discuss issues relating to dental academia, outreach, and education. The UCSF Student Chapter received the 2008-09 Outstanding Activities and Service Award." Third-year dental student James Han was a recipient of the 2009 ADEA/Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products Preventive Dentistry Scholarship. He also will continue to serve nationally on the ADEA Council of Students as the 2009-10 Center Group Leader for Equity and Diversity. Brian L. Schmidt, DDS, MD, PhD, FACS, Associate Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the UCSF School of Dentistry and Director of the OMFS Oncology Fellowship, received an ADEA Presidential Citation from ADEA President and former UCSF School of Dentistry Dean Charles N. Bertolami. The citation reads: "As an exemplary role model for dental faculty of the future, Dr. Schmidt is a clinician, teacher, and scientist. He holds dental, medical, and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, San Francisco and has inspired many students and residents throughout the years to follow his example." D3 Chi Viet was a recipient recognized for her 2008 AADR/ADEA Academic Dental Career Fellowship, under the mentorship of Dr. Schmidt and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Dr. Caroline Damsky. Sheila Nguyen, Nathan Granillo, Dr. Damsky and Orofacial Sciences Associate Professor Dr. Peter Loomer were invited to speak at the ADEA Presidential Symposia, both of which were hosted by Associate Dean for Education Dr. Dorothy A. Perry. Nguyen and Loomer's topic was "Team Learning in Dental Education", and Granillo and Damsky's topic was "Peer Assessment and Developing Professional Competence". The Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations held a forum to provide an update on the National Dental Board Exam. Led by the Joint Commission, the session was well attended by faculty and administrators with much discussion centering on grading and the transition to a pass/fail system, possibly as soon as January 1st, 2010. The Joint Commission meets again in April and will reassess the issue, after which the ADEA Student Chapter will hear from the Joint Commission and arrange a lunchtime debriefing to give students the opportunity to discuss the matter directly with a representative from the Joint Commission and hear about the other developments from Phoenix.
