Brian L. Schmidt
Named Director of the PhD Program
in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences

Dr. John D.B. Featherstone, Dean, and Dr. Richard Jordan, Associate Dean for Research at the UCSF School of Dentistry, are pleased to announce the appointment of Brian L. Schmidt, DDS, MD, PhD, FACS as the new Director of the UCSF Oral and Craniofacial Sciences PhD Program effective September 1, 2009.

Dr. Schmidt will replace Dr. Caroline Damsky as the Program Director. Dr. Damsky was the creator and initial director of the UCSF Oral Biology Graduate Program, currently known as the Oral and Craniofacial Sciences Program.

Dr. Schmidt received his PhD in Oral Biology at the University of California San Francisco where he also earned a DDS and MD and completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He completed a fellowship in head and neck oncology at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland Oregon.

Dr. Schmidt currently is an Associate Professor, Residency Program Director, Oncology Fellowship Director and Vice Chair in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of California San Francisco. His research interests include biomarkers of oral cancer and neuronal mechanisms of oral cancer pain.

Last year Dr. Schmidt was honored with the UCSF Academic Senate Distinction in Teaching Award. He is the principal investigator of an NIH funded laboratory and has over 60 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
