UCSF School of Dentistry Faculty Member and Assistant Dean for Community Clinics Dr. Nelson Artiga-Diaz: "I met George when he and Dr. Harvey Brody interviewed me as a dental school applicant back in March, 1971. George was a UC Regents Scholar, and upon graduation in 1973, George was the top student in his class, having won all the major student awards at the time. In 1970, George and Dr. Manuel Garcia founded Chicanos in Health Education of UCSF, with George and Manuel becoming the first elected Chair and Co-Chairs of CHE. On a personal note, I was priviledged to interview and photograph Dr. Castañeda in Visalia for the Why I Give feature of the 2007 UCSF School of Dentistry magazine (Adobe Acrobat PDF: http://dentistry.ucsf.edu/about/Mag2007.pdf). A kind man of gentle good humor and many good works, what came through in our conversation was his love of life and family, his community, his profession, and the School. He was passionate about all of these, and especially about the many students he mentored and encouraged through the years. His life was a gift, and he will be warmly remembered and deeply missed in many communities.
