Research and Clinical Excellence Day 2009 |
|
|
This year's event was in part the culmination of what Research and Clinical Excellence Day Chair Dr. Peter Loomer lightheartedly described as "The Year of Jane Weintraub", beginning in December 2008 with an unprecedented $24.4 million National Institutes of Health grant to UCSF Dentistry's CAN DO Center directed by Dr. Weintraub, continuing with the H. Trendley Dean Memorial Award for meritorious contributions to epidemiology and public health at the International Association for Dental Research’s 87th General Session & Exhibition in Miami, FL in April 2009, and finally, honored with the Faculty Research Lecturer Award at Research and Clinical Excellence Day 2009, where she was introduced by longtime colleague and co-investigator Dr. Stuart Gansky. Earlier, the Outstanding Clinician Award was presented to Dr. W. Stephan Eakle of the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences, introduced by PRDS faculty colleague Dr. Fritz Finzen. The day was kicked off with a note of welcome from Dr. Loomer, Associate Dean for Research Dr. Richard C.K. Jordan, and Dean John D.B. Featherstone, who was immedately preceeded by honored guest Dr. Susan Desmond-Hellmann, the recently-arrived Chancellor of UCSF. The Keynote Address was delivered by by University of Florida Department of Oral Biology Chair Dr. Robert A. Burne, and the Mentor of the Year Award was presented by D2 and John C. Greene Society President Almut Ellwanger to Department of Orofacial Sciences Associate Clinical Professor Dr. Brent Lin. For many, however, the student presentations constitute the centerpiece of Research and Clinical Excellence Day, given in Cole Hall (oral presentations) and in the Millberry Union Gymnasium (poster presentations) during the lunch break, with abstracts published in the program book. First-, Second- and Third-Place Winners were announced in Pre-Doctoral, Graduate and Post-Doctoral Categories. UCSF Dentistry's Research and Clinical Excellence Day 2010 is scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 14, 2010 in Cole Hall. Complete List of Student Presentation Winners
