UCSF Dental Students Rush to Aid
Passerby in Distress

D3s Gail Garrett and John Matchett exemplified the unhesitant public service ethos of UCSF when an urgent situation presented itself recently in the neighborhood near campus.

Garrett describes the scene: "We were standing at the Muni stop and witnessed a man having what we think was a seizure. He hit a car (with a bicycle), then proceeded down the street and finally fell over at the corner. John and I ran down to help him; he was unable to walk so we pretty much carried him inside a restaurant and monitored him while the shop owners called 911. We tried to take vitals and we relayed all the information we could to the fire department medic when they arrived."

Irving St. resident Violet Banta credits "these wonderful young people" in a call to Interim Dean John D.B. Featherstone for their quick response, possibly preventing further injury to the unidentified elderly man or others, and especially for waiting with him and looking after him until emergency services arrived to take him for examination and treatment.

"I think they deserve a lot of recognition" said Banta, noting that Garrett and Matchett hesitated to be highlighted for their fast action and compassion. Says Garrett: "[We] just happened to be in the right place at the right time to help out."

Commending the students, Dean Featherstone cites the incident as an example of how preparedness is essential: "You never know when you might need it."
