Dentistry Administration Shares Information and Seeks Ideas in Budget Town Halls

Dean Featherstone and Interim Associate Dean for Administration and Finance Susan Schultz hosted a town hall meeting for School staff in C-701 on Wednesday, one of a series aimed at sharing information and seeking ideas from faculty, staff and students as the UCSF School of Dentistry addresses the severe budget crisis facing UCSF, UC, the State of California, and beyond. Both Featherstone and Schultz emphasized that the process will be as open, transparent, and inclusive as possible.

The Dean reviewed the general state of the School, detailing the current budget and the funding of captial projects and programs, and speculating about possible scenarios dependent on the outcome of the state budget debate, which was still unresolved at the time of the meeting. (A budget agreement was finally reached overnight in the State Capitol in Sacramento.)

Outlining the tremendous gains in the operational efficiency of the School in recent years, Featherstone praised the work of staff while offering the sober assessment that more will be asked of everyone. Associate Dean Schultz concluded the meeting by appealing to members of the School community to share their ideas for furthering the goals of greater effieicncy, cost-savings and revenue-generation as the School works to sustainably weather the crisis and enhance its preeminence as an institution of education, research, and public service.
