How We Integrate DDS & PhD Programs
pin

Financial support and fees are provided for a 5 year period through a grant from NIH/NIDR to prepare academic dentist leaders through the integration of the DDS and PhD programs at UCSF. The combined program is planned to reduce the time needed to obtain both degrees by  1-2 years, so that a typical program would take approximately 7-8 years. Additional support will be sought to provide the DSTP candidate financial support throughout almost all of the combined program. The structure of the typical program is shown below.

Integrated DDS* PhD Programs in Oral & Craniofacial Sciences,  Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, or Epidemiology

Program Year/Funding Source Training Activity:
Year Funding Source % PhD/Research %DDS
1 University fellowships 30 70
2 year 01 of DSTP support 30 70
3 year 02 of DSTP support 10 90
4 year 03 of DSTP support 80 20
PhD Qualifying Exam
5 year 04 of DSTP support 80 20
6 year 05 of DSTP support 80 20
DDS Completed

7 Laboratory or other support 80 20
8 Laboratory funds 80 20
PhD completed
Totals: 4.7 years (PhD/Research) 3.3 years (DDS)

Since 1996 we have found that this plan is realistic, although times required may vary and each individual program will be tailored to meet the combined clinical and research needs of the candidate. In addition, this program sets a pattern over the last years in which the DSTP candidate combines research and academic programs with an integrated 20% effort in the clinic. This offers the advantage of establishing a pattern that might be expected to continue into the subsequent career of a dental school faculty member.
