ORTHO CLINIC

The UCSF orthodontic clinic, radiology facility, laboratory, and digital imaging facility were completely remodeled in the year 2000. The operatories have all new and up-to date equipment. Each resident has a desk with access to the computer network. Each resident is part of a three person team which operates in a four chair section of the clinic.

UCSF offers an intense clinical experience. Since it is a three year program, residents start and finish a substantial number of cases. They will each start close to 60 cases. Faculty supervisors guide the resident through diagnosis and treatment planning, and then are present during all clinic appointments. The clinic director is present during clinic hours.

Our residents experience a range of case categories: cleft palate, early treatment, adolescent and adult, orthognathic surgery, implant anchorage, and inter-disciplinary treatment, (with the periodontology and prosthetics departments)

Digital copies of patient x rays and photographs are maintained in a central computer network. Residents have easy access to these records to produce case reports and document their treatment. Besides the digital facility for cephalograms and panograms, we have our own 3-D CT scan unit for producing volumetric images and slices. These records are normally used in implant, surgery, syndrome, and impaction cases.

The residents are supported by business staff, appointment coordinators, and Registered Dental Assistants. We will introduce residents to evidence based treatment with both traditional techniques and the most advanced and modern systems of orthodontics.
