MISSION OF THE SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY

TEACHING
• Preparing individuals for the practice
of dentistry and dental hygiene, particularly for
pivotal positions in the profession.
• Educating teachers and researchers for service in
universities, dental schools, medical schools, laboratories,
public health, governmental agencies, foundations,
and industry.
• Stimulating interest in lifelong learning.
RESEARCH
• Developing new knowledge in disciplines (for example,
biomaterials, bioengineering, and craniofacial biology)
that will improve the ways in which damage to oral
and maxillofacial structures can be prevented and
treated.
• Advancing, synthesizing, and disseminating knowledge
about the practice of dentistry and other related
issues through research (e.g., dental health care
delivery, behavioral science, epidemiology, and bioethics).
PUBLIC SERVICE
• Serving the public and the profession
as members of governmental advisory committees, editorial
boards of journals, review panels, and other similar
bodies.
• Promoting public health through improving public
understanding of the benefits of good dental care.
• Improving access to high quality dental care for
all people in San Francisco and throughout California.
• Providing high quality dental care to those seeking
the school's services.
• Serving as a resource for the profession and the
community for consultation and/or the provision of
a wide spectrum of tertiary community services as
well as continuing education.
