Volunteering around the globe....
UCSF
Division of Pediatric Dentistry participates in a number of
community/global health projects designed to improve oral health both
locally and internationally.
Our residents have a strong
track record of participation in local and international
projects. Pediatric Dentistry Residents have been accepted as
scholars in UCSF Global Health Scholars Program for two years running
now with Ginelle Sakima (2007) and Yogita Butani (2008) the latest participants. The Global
Health
Scholars program is the first in the nation to include residents from
different disciplines with the overall goal of exposing and cultivating
residents' interest in global health issues and scholarly work,
internationally and nationally. It offers a great opportunity
for
our residents to expand their interest and commitment to oral health
education and interact with different disciplines to achieve that goal.
Locally,
our residents are actively involved in oral health education in the
community, giving preventive lectures and treating the underserved at
the Tenderloin School in San Francisco. They also give
lectures
on a regular basis to pediatricians throughout the Bay Area, continuing
our commitment to improve the oral health of our young patients.
Faculty
are likewise involved in oral health community projects. Most
recently, a faculty member, several residents and a former resident
traveled to Guatemala where they treated the local population and gave
lectures to physicians, dental professionals and patients.
