The Pediatric Dentistry experience of the pre-doctoral
students starts in the spring quarter of their second year with a 10
lecture course (PedDent 120) encompassing basic principles of dentistry
for the child and adolescent. In the following quarter, another 10
lecture course deals with clinical aspects of pediatric dentistry
(PedDent 130). Later in the summer quarter, students spend 3 weeks in a
simulation lab working on pediatric typodonts practicing a variety of
restorative techniques. The students also receive practical training on
how to use inhalation sedation (nitrous oxide) before their clinical
rotation starts.
The clinical rotation is comprised of one half-day
every week for one year (fall quarter of junior year through summer
quarter of the senior year) in the Pediatric Dentistry clinic at the
Parnassus campus. During that time, they not only treat their own
patients but are also welcome to assist in the graduate clinic and
observe cases in the operating room. In their senior year, they spend
one half-day every week for 2 quarters in the Pediatric Dentistry
clinic at the San Francisco General Hospital.
