Biographical Outline - John D.B. Featherstone

Dr. John Featherstone is Professor and Chair of the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He earned his M.Sc. in physical chemistry from the University of Manchester (UK) and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Wellington (New Zealand). His research over the past 27 years has covered several aspects of cariology (study of tooth decay) including fluoride mechanisms of action, caries risk assessment, de- and remineralization of the teeth, apatite chemistry, salivary dysfunction, caries (tooth decay) prevention, and caries management by risk assessment. He also leads research into laser effects on dental hard tissues with emphasis on caries prevention and early caries removal. Dr. Featherstone was recently appointed as the first Leland and Gladys Barber Distinguished Professor of Dentistry at UCSF.
Dr. Featherstone was the year 2000 recipient of the International Association for Dental Research distinguished scientist award for research in dental caries, the year 2002 recipient of the T.H. Maiman award for research in laser dentistry from the Academy of Laser Dentistry, and the 2002 Zsolnai Prize winner from the European Organization for Caries Research in recognition of his life long research in dental caries. His work in promoting the application of research in practical dentistry was recognized in 2002 by the Krajewski Award from the American College of Dentists.
Dr. Featherstone is an active member of several international scientific organizations including the International Association for Dental Research; the American Chemical Society; and the European Organization for Caries Research. He is principal investigator on two major research grants funded by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research and co-investigator on three others. He serves as a reviewer for several scientific journals and is on two editorial boards (Journal of Clinical Dentistry, and Clinical Oral Investigations).
