Characterized as "a major victory for oral health", the board of the Santa Clara Valley Water District voted 7-0 to fluoridate the water it supplies to portions of the city and several bedroom communities of San Jose, California. As a result, more than 280,000 additional Californians will gain access to fluoridated tap water.
UCSF Dentistry's Howard Pollick, DDS, MPH, professor in the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences, also serves as a spokesperson on fluoridation issues for the American Dental Association, and in that role he testified in support of the proposal as part of a team presenting the views of oral health professionals.
Several days before the vote, the Mercury News published an editorial strongly supporting the fluoridation proposal.
