An amazing and exciting time for UCSF participants at the IADR/AADR Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington, March 20 – 23, 2013. UCSF had a record 61 abstracts accepted for presentation at this session.
Dr. Sally Marshall received the AADR Irwin D. Mandel Distinguished Mentoring Award . This award was established to provide national recognition for outstanding efforts to foster and promote research training and career development of students, trainees and junior faculty. It is intended to identify individuals at all levels of their career with an exemplary record of mentoring.
Dr. Richard Jordan received the Oral Medicine & Pathology Research Award . Established by the IADR Experimental Pathology Group and supported by Unilever Oral Care, this award recognizes outstanding and sustained peer-reviewed research that has contributed to the understanding of the mechanisms governing the health and disease of the oral cavity and associated structures, principally encompassing skin, bone, and the oral soft tissue.
Joshua Emrick (DDS/PhD) was sworn in as the new President of National Student Research Group (NSRG). Josh will serve in this capacity for the next year.
The following students were awarded AADR Student Research Fellowships:

- Timothy Wen (Andrew Jheon)
These Fellowships, supported by several major industrial companies, as well as by AADR and IADR Group Chapters, Sections, and members, are sponsored and administered by the AADR and have been created to encourage dental students living in the United States to consider careers in oral health research.
The John C. Greene Society (local chapter of the National Student Research Group) accepted their award for outstanding student research group newsletter.
The following students received AADR Bloc Travel Grants. The AADR Program Committee and IADR Groups reviewed abstracts submitted by individuals applying for travel grant funds. The Program Committee based its decision on and assigned high priority to: 1) originality of research design, 2) innovations in technique, and 3) scientific merit.
