UCSF Master of Science in Dental Hygiene Program Director Margaret M. Walsh, RDH, MS, MA, EdD, has been honored with the Esther Wilkins Lifetime Achievement Award.
The award was accepted on her behalf by colleagues Barbara Heckman, RDH, MS, faculty member of the Master of Science in Dental Hygiene program at the UCSF School of Dentistry, and Denise M. Bowen, RDH, MS, of Idaho State University, at a June 21 reception during the American Dental Hygienists' Association's (ADHA) 90th Annual Session in Boston.
The award, presented by Dimensions of Dental Hygiene and sponsored by Colgate, is founded on the values embodied by Esther M. Wilkins, BS, RDH, DMD, known as the "matriarch of dental hygiene."
In her unwavering commitment to education, research, and mentorship, Dr. Walsh exemplifies leadership and continues to further the scholarly identity of dental hygiene through theory building and research. The author of more than 100 scientific articles and recipient of more than $10 million in grants from the National Institutes of Health and the State of California, Dr. Walsh is one of dental hygiene's most prolific researchers.
Says Jane L. Forrest, RDH, EdD, Professor of Clinical Dentistry and Section Chair of Behavioral Science at the Ostrow School of Dentistry at USC, and Director of the National Center for Dental Hygiene Research and Practice: "Peggy Walsh is one of our greatest advocates and spokespersons for advancing the level of dental hygiene to a true profession. She is one of dental hygiene's (and dentistry's) premier researchers, having received numerous grant awards for millions of dollars to conduct research on tobacco use and cessation using a community-based, interprofessional collaborative approach. Peggy serves as a role model for those looking to advance their academic careers and scholarly endeavors. She has been a wonderful research mentor to me and many others as we have developed the National Center for Dental Hygiene Research & Practice. Peg is dearly beloved by her students and colleagues."
