George W. Taylor, DMD, DrPH, Chair of the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences (PRDS) and Leland A. and Gladys K. Barber Distinguished Professor in Dentistry at the UCSF School of Dentistry, is very happy to announce that Susan Hyde, DDS, MPH, has accepted appointment as Chair of the Division of Oral Epidemiology and Dental Public Health (OEDPH) in the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences.
The Division provides a population and community-based approach to oral health and is home to post-graduate programs in Dental Public Health (Dr. Howard Pollick, Director), Geriatric Dentistry (Dr. Susan Hyde, Director), and Masters of Science in Dental Hygiene (Dr. Margaret Walsh, Director).
Additionally, Dr. Stuart Gansky who is director of the NIH/NIDCR-funded Center to Address Disparities in Children’s Oral Health (CAN DO) and most of the Center’s investigators and staff are members of this Division.
Dr. Hyde has served as Interim Chair of OEDPH since 2011 following the previous Division Chair, Dr. Jane Weintraub, accepting the position of Dean of the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. During her role as Interim Chair, Dr. Hyde has demonstrated excellent leadership of the Division.
Dr. Hyde joined UCSF as a faculty member in 2004 and is Associate Clinical Professor of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences. She is an alumna of our School of Dentistry and received her MPH and PhD in Epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley. She is a specialist in Dental Public Health, having completed her residency here at UCSF in our Dental Public Health Program. Dr. Hyde also completed her fellowship in Geriatrics at UCSF.
Dr. Hyde has established a distinguished presence with her teaching excellence in the UCSF School of Dentistry as well as across the UCSF campus. She is recognized as a leader in the UCSF campus educational enterprise where she serves as the Faculty Lead in Interprofessional Education (IPE) for the School of Dentistry. In this role she collaborates with the Faculty Leads from the other schools to develop didactic, clinical, and elective curricula for all UCSF health professions students.
