Pathways to Research

UCSF SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY RESEARCH DAY 2004

UCSF School of Medicine Dean David Kessler, MD, shared his strategies for FDA regulation of Big Tobacco and talked about the importance of researchers asking the right questions in his presentation “Tobacco Wars,” delivered at the School of Dentistry’s second annual Research Day on March 3, 2004. School of Dentistry students, faculty and staff gathered in UCSF’s Cole Hall to celebrate “Pathways to Research” and hear about how successful scientists like Kessler faced seemingly insurmountable challenges.

The 2004 School of Dentistry Faculty Research Lecturer, Susan Fisher, PhD, presented her work on the role of carbohydrate-based mechanisms in embryo implantation in a presentation titled “Salivating Over Reproduction.” Guest speaker David Relman, MD, Stanford University School of Medicine, spoke on his work on “Microbial Diversity and Oral Health,” discussing his research directed toward the development and application of molecular methods to identify previously unrecognized microbial pathogens.

The judges selected the following individuals as winners for their research presentations. Prizes of $350 were awarded for each of the following three categories (those with two winners split the prize):
