Safety and Enforcement
The California State Penal Code and California Education Code recognize the UC Systemwide Police Officers as State Peace Officers, and they are accorded all the responsibilities associated with the position. The UC Police Officers are uniformed in dark blue pants and dark blue shirts and are fully armed. The UCSF Police Department is here to protect and serve the entire campus community. If you have any questions regarding your safety or would like further information about crime prevention or personal safety, please call the Police Department. The UCSF Police Department also encourages all members of the campus community to view our website at www.police.ucsf.edu, where you can obtain information on crime statistics, special alert bulletins and information about the Police Department. Additionally, there is a description of how to sign up for a listserv where a University employee or student would automatically receive alert bulletins to their email as they are distributed in the buildings
If you must work or study alone in a building, take extra precautions to ensure your safety. Some corridors and hallways have campus telephones to provide easy communication to the UCSF Police Department. In an emergency on campus dial ext. 9-911. From a pay phone call 911 (no money required). Within an office or laboratory, close and lock the door. Never leave the office or lab unlocked, even if you’re gone for only a few minutes. Call the UCSF Police if you see or hear anything suspicious or out of the ordinary. Tell a friend, colleague, or the UCSF Police where you are and inform them when you leave the building. Before you leave, arrange to meet a friend. Be sure that you are aware of your surroundings.
Car and Garage Security
If you drive to campus to study or work and on-street parking is NOT available, you can park your car in the Millberry Union Garage. Hourly rates are posted at the entrance to the garage and a limited number of monthly night permits (4:45 p.m. until 8:00 a.m.) can be obtained. Contact the Parking Office at ext. 6-2566 for permit information. The UCSF garage has police emergency alarms located on poles painted a bright yellow and marked POLICE EMERGENCY ALARM. There are also security mirrors in the stairwell for the Millberry Union Garage. Use them to check and verify if anyone else is using the staircase. There are emergency phones and Police Panic buttons in all of the elevators. When activated, they will immediately alert the UCSF Police of a potential problem.
If you park on the streets, look for spaces in a well-lit and -traveled area that is as close to your destination as possible. If you notice any strangers lurking in the area, notify the Police immediately. If you are by yourself, have friends walk you to and from your car and set up your own buddy system. Use the Parking and Transportation Shuttle for an escort to your car if it is parked within a mile radius of the campus. Have your car keys ready and check the floor and back seats before you get in.
