Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

The UCSF Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery supports dental students, residents, and faculty in pursuing comprehensive basic science and clinical research across multiple UCSF and affiliated sites, including Parnassus, Mission Bay, the San Francisco VA, Zuckerberg San Francisco General, and Highland Hospital.

OMFS houses the residency training program, which includes both a dual-degree DDS/MD track and a combined residency–PhD option for interested applicants.

The department offers extensive opportunities to investigate key questions in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Areas of research

OMFS engages in three separate areas of projects: basic science, translational research, and clinical research. Descriptions of our current research projects are available on the projects page of our research website.

Basic science

Basic science research within the department focuses heavily on pain research through the Levine Lab. Past projects have emphasized understanding the transition from acute to chronic pain, neurotoxic effects of cancer chemotherapy, and the use of hyaluronan in the treatment of pain.

Translational Research

Translational research in OMFS focuses on tissue engineering and regeneration. An example includes the interventional study for the evaluation of a bioengineered living bone graft for mandibular ramus reconstruction, with the work coming from faculty at the San Francisco VA Medical Center.

Clinical Research

OMFS faculty conducts clinical research across all of our sites and focuses on research questions in the areas of maxillofacial trauma, craniofacial surgery, benign pathology, malignant pathology, reconstruction, dental implants, temporomandibular joint disorders, sleep medicine/surgery, and surgical education.
