Discover treatment concepts and modalities for medically complex patients—particularly with hemodynamically unstable conditions like cardiac and valvular diseases, hematological disorders, patients on cancer therapy, as well as uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension. You’ll learn how the available guidelines for dental treatment of such conditions in a safe environment can help reduce post-operative complications. With a focus on preventive modalities, you’ll increase the prevention of dental disease through adequate home care for your patients.

Instructor: Altaf Shah, BDS, MS, PhD
Dr. Altaf Shah received his bachelor's degree in Dentistry in India, his MS in the specialty of Community Dental Practice with Merit, and a postgraduate clinical certificate in Special Care Dentistry in London. He worked as a faculty member at several dental schools and was instrumental in establishing a new dental school with Dar Al Uloom University, Riyadh, from 2015 to 2018. In 2018, Dr. Shah started the Special Care Dentistry clinics at the University Dental Hospital, King Saud University - the largest dental teaching institute in the Middle East and North African Region. Dr. Shah received a fellowship award from the Special Care Dentistry Association in Columbus, Ohio, in May 2022 and was inducted as a member of the American Association of Hospital Dentists (AAHD) board of directors. He has 15 years of clinical expertise in oral health care of individuals with special needs and medically complex patients. He has a keen research interest, has several publications in peer-reviewed journals, serves on the editorial board of a few journals, and is a journal reviewer for more than ten indexed journals, including the Special Care in Dentistry Journal. Dr. Altaf Shah is an associate professor at the Delta Dental Clinic for Urgent and Special Care, Department of Community Dental Sciences at Marquette University School of Dentistry.

Cancellation/Refunds:
Tuition refund, less a $25 cancellation fee, will be issued only for cancellations received in writing at least 3 business days prior to the start date of the course. No refunds will be issued for late cancellations or no-shows. We reserve the right to cancel any course due to circumstances beyond our control; under those circumstances we will refund all course fee payments. Please be aware that UCSF School of Dentistry CDE is not responsible for reimbursement of nonrefundable airline tickets or any other travel expenses in the event that a course is canceled.
