Dr. Shiboski is the Leland A. and Gladys K. Barber Distinguished Professor in Dentistry. She obtained her DDS from the Université René Descartes in Paris, and has advanced training in Epidemiology (MPH and PhD from UC Berkeley) and Oral Medicine (she is a certified Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine). She has been a faculty member in the UCSF School of Dentistry since 1994, after initially joining the school as a resident in the Advanced Education in General Dentistry program. Her research experience focuses on the epidemiology of oral manifestations related to immune dysfunction and of Oral Cancer.
Dr. Shiboski has received multiple NIH grants and contracts since 1994. She implemented a collaborative study, funded through the AIDS Fogarty Program, exploring oral candidiasis as a surrogate marker of HIV disease progression among women in Zimbabwe. For over 8 years she lead the NIDCR-funded Oral HIV/AIDS Research Alliance, a Collaborative Science Group of the AIDS Clinical Trial Group (ACTG) Network. The ACTG is the largest AIDS clinical trial network in the world and has been funded by NIAID for more than 25 years.
As principal investigator of the Sjögren’s International Collaborative Clinical Alliance (SICCA) Biorepository, Dr. Shiboski has helped establish new classification criteria for Sjögren’s Syndrome that were provisionally approved by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR). The other goal of the SICCA contract is to disseminate Sjögren’s syndrome data and biospecimens, collected during the initial 10-year contract, to scientists around the world to advance the field with pathogenesis, epidemiologic, and genetic studies. She is also leading an international effort to obtain definitive approval from both ACR and the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) of a final set of criteria to be used for entry into Sjögren’s syndrome clinical trials.
