Ray Stewart, DMD, MS, has been tapped to serve as interim chair of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry, in the Department of Orofacial Sciences. His appointment took effect July 1, in conjunction with the sabbatical of Dr. Caroline Shiboski, chair of the division and OFS.
Dr. Stewart is an HS clinical professor in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry, which he joined in 2014. He earned his DMD and an MS in medical genetics from the University of Oregon. He spent 12 years at UCLA, including seven years as the director of the Pediatric Dentistry Postgraduate Program, and 10 years coordinating the Craniofacial Anomalies Program. Dr. Stewart then devoted 25 years to private practice, before returning to the University of California.
Since joining UCSF, Dr. Stewart has made substantial contributions to the post-graduate residency, and receives outstanding teaching evaluations from the residents. As part of the division’s mission to expose residents to the importance of public policy and patient advocacy, he travels each year with residents who have been selected as California Society for Pediatric Dentistry (CSPD) Board Interns and/or CSPD Graduate Student Legislative and Advocacy Interns to both Washington, DC, and Sacramento. Dr. Stewart and the residents meet with California senators and House of Representatives members asking them for their support on legislation related to important issues such as Medicaid reform, Title VII funding, and bills related to pediatric dentistry, which ultimately will benefit the health and welfare of the children served at UCSF.
Dr. Stewart’s current research endeavors include projects with Alameda and San Francisco Counties to develop strategies to increase access to care and the delivery of comprehensive oral health services to children covered under the DentiCal program. These projects are funded under the Dental Transformation Initiative (DTI) and the California Department of Health Care Services. He also mentors pediatric dental residents in their master's degree research projects.
Dr. Stewart serves as the pediatric dental specialist on the UCSF craniofacial team at Benioff Children’s Hospital in San Francisco. He also provides comprehensive oral rehabilitation services and teaching in the operating room, where he mentors pediatric dentistry residents caring for children with complex medical histories who cannot receive dental care in traditional outpatient settings. His background and work in craniofacial anomalies at UCSF have served as a valuable educational resource for residents.
