The John Greene Society and the student chapter of ADEA at UCSF have announced their annual awards for 2020.
The research-focused John Greene Society named Diane Barber, PhD, recipient of its Excellence in Research Award. This award is given to faculty members who are not only leaders in their respective fields but who have also demonstrated exceptional support of JGS and its mission to promote research opportunities for dental students. Dr. Barber is the endowed chair of the Department of Cell and Tissue Biology. She has been an active participant in the School of Dentistry Summer Research Fellowship program for more than 10 years.
“The most notable aspect of Dr. Barber’s mentoring style is how personal she is with all her students. She engages her trainees with a unique and genuine interest,” said second-year dental student Burin Thanasuwat, Dr. Barber’s mentee this year. “In every meeting, she would ask me, ‘Isn’t research fun?’ It did not matter if my results that week were good or not, she would ask me that question. And it positively reinforced me to be excited about my own research, by reframing the work we do in terms of how much joy it brings.”
