Dr. Sampeter Odera, DMD, MD, has been awarded the UCSF School of Dentistry Outstanding Clinician Award. Dr. Odera is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon at UCSF Dentistry. He was nominated by his peers for his everyday exceptional care and ability to empathize with his patients.
Dr. Odera will be recognized at Research and Clinical Excellence Day (RCED) on Oct. 12 and will give a presentation at the event.
"This award is both a privilege and huge responsibility. It is also a reminder to continue to celebrate the teams that enable us to participate toward world-class patient care," he said.
Dr. Odera is a Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon who graduated from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 2008 and the UC San Francisco School of Medicine in 2012. He completed his residency at UCSF in 2014, and a fellowship in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia in 2015.
The focus of his fellowship training was orthognathic surgery, temporomandibular joint surgery, and arthroscopy. While in Nova Scotia he was trained in surgical planning and techniques developed by Dr. Jean Delaire and David Precious, both pioneers in the field of orthognathic surgery.
His primary clinical interests are surgery for obstructive sleep apnea, orthognathic surgery, TMJ surgery, wisdom teeth, dental implants, anesthesia, pathology, reconstruction, facial trauma and virtual surgical treatment planning.
Dr. Odera has also completed a competitive Howard Hughes Research Fellowship studying the role of Bone Marrow Stem Cells (BMSCs) in craniofacial regeneration. His current research interests include cardiac markers for obstructive sleep apnea and genetic regulation of odontogenic tumors/cysts.
