"There are many reasons why one would choose UCSF as an institution to train in. For me, it was UCSF’s rare combination of being thought of as the most advanced scientific and clinically knowledgeable institution while being encouraged to innovate and challenge that same knowledge. My training improved my approach to patient care and afforded me the tools needed to take thought-provoking ideas from the clinic or the laboratory and test them in one or both environments."
Residency in Oral Medicine, 2003; PhD in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences, 2004

"As an international dentist, my dream was to train in the United States particularly in the field of Oral Medicine. I was particularly interested in a residency program that would be at a prestigious university specializing in health sciences and patient care. The Oral Medicine program at the University of California, San Francisco got my attention with its integrated health and research environment and empowered medical staff. I was so happy to have had the opportunity to train at this prestigious university, moving between multiple medical departments, and attending rotations with doctors in different disciplines, including the world-renowned UCSF Sol Silverman Oral Medicine Clinic. It was a great experience for me training in a city and university that believes in diversity and offers me all the facilities to complete a successful training in clinical research and oral medicine at UCSF Sol Silverman Oral Medicine Clinic."

Piamkamon Vacharotayangul, DDS, PhD
"I came to UCSF in 1999 to pursue a PhD in Oral Biology (later known as the Oral and Craniofacial Sciences program) combined with a Fellowship in Oral Medicine. I was drawn to UCSF by the prominent research in oral diseases from cancers, autoimmune diseases and HIV led by faculty in the program which were considered the leaders of the field. The high-volume of cases with varieties of diagnoses was our everyday eye-opening experience. But it was the stimulating learning environment among diverse peers and guidance from the professors that shaped me into a competent oral medicine specialist. After graduation, I was able to carry on to practice this art and science in my home country with continuous support from the professors. I am proud to pass on my love for and appreciation of the science of oral diagnosis and oral medicine to a new generation of dentists."
