Welcome to the UCSF mini-fellowship in oral oncology. Our fellowship is a six-month, full-time training program with salary support for dentists who are committed to developing expertise in the management of oral complications from cancer therapy and promotion of oral health in the community. Candidates must possess a DMD, DDS or equivalent degree. Clinical training is based at the UCSF School of Dentistry and Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, with additional rotations at other UCSF affiliated teaching hospitals.
Our mini-fellowship program provides focused clinical training in oral oncology, oral dysplasia and oral medicine. The fellows also rotate in medical services including bone marrow transplantation, head and neck oncology, and oncology. The patient population served includes adults and children.
Clinical Experience
Fellows will gain expertise in the diagnosis and management of oral and dental complications from cancer treatment in the outpatient clinics at the Parnassus campus (Sol Silverman Oral Medicine Clinic) and Mission Bay campus (oral oncology, oral dysplasia and dental oncology) and rotate in several services including hematology, radiation oncology, medical oncology, pediatric BMT, and head and neck oncology.
Didactics and Teaching
Fellows attend a wide variety of courses, lectures, seminars and rounds. These include an orientation lecture series, weekly Head and Neck Oncology Tumor Board and Stem Cell Transplantation Grand Rounds, and bi-weekly Oral Medicine and Oral Oncology Clinical Pathological Conferences. Fellows have the opportunity to teach UCSF dental students, oral medicine residents, and others in the clinic and formal didactic lectures.
Research
Fellows receive protected research time and are encouraged to explore collaborative opportunities across the UCSF Campus.
Community Outreach
Fellows will work with community health centers, hospitals, and cancer treatment centers as well as dental organizations to provide community-based oral health outreach programs to serve the needs of the Bay Area community.
Evaluation
Performance is monitored carefully during the Mini-Fellowship in Oral Oncology. Fellows receive in-person feedback on a regular basis and are formally evaluated by supervising attendings and the program director. The fellows also have the opportunity to evaluate the faculty and rotations.
