Leon Assael, DMDLeon Assael, DMD, director of community-based education and practice in the School of Dentistry, has pledged a gift of $25,000 to the school.
The gift is pledged in lieu of an honorarium from the American Dental Education Association, of which Dr. Assael is the current board chair.
“I would like this gift to support the success of future academic dentists at UCSF, by supporting our ADEA student chapter programs to promote academic dentistry careers,” said Dr. Assael, who also is in the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences.
“Dental education today is facing the challenge of sustainability,” he continued. “Only about one in 200 dental graduates nationally is considering a career in academics. However, there is reason for optimism here at UCSF; the school’s ADEA student chapter has dozens of members.
