Envisioning the New American Dental School
With the revitalization of our historic Parnassus Heights campus underway, UCSF Dentistry is thinking boldly about the future.
Following an intensive visioning study with design and architecture firm Valerio Dewalt Train, we developed a forward-looking framework for our future home. The report, "The New American Dental School," outlines what it means to build a next-generation dental school at UCSF—one that advances health and science through innovation, interprofessional education, integrated care, and deep community connection.
This vision will guide the capital planning, architectural design, and construction efforts that will unfold over the next 8–10 years.
UCSF Chancellor Sam Hawgood
"For 143 years, the School of Dentistry has played a vital role in carrying out UCSF’s mission of advancing health for all. In the coming decade, we will build the spaces that its learners, scientists, clinicians and staff need to carry that work forward for generations to come."
Community voices
We asked learners, faculty, and staff across the school what they hope to see in the facilities that will define our future. Their perspectives highlight the values, aspirations, and priorities shaping the New American Dental School.
Discovery and innovation
Members of our research and academic community share their hopes for spaces that inspire curiosity, support collaboration, and make it easier to turn new ideas into meaningful discoveries.
Future facilities
Learners, clinicians, and staff reflect on what a modern dental school should offer—welcoming environments, updated classrooms and clinics, and flexible spaces that promote connection, learning, and excellent patient care.
